Plasticity – Flexibility – Resiliency

Well, this all started well.

(french version below)

Géry and I had to leave in 20 days to cross the USA with our bike, to meet those who are working to find solutions, alternatives, new ways to live in harmony on this planet.

COVID 19 has caused us to revise our plans.  No possible plane for Géry, no solar-bike for me, no hotels or campground available, and no possibility for meeting with all those problem solvers.  So, it was a bit "should I stay, or should I go now"?

We both decided to go together but separately.  We are going to travel two continents at the same time: America and Europe.  Some would see it as greed, we see resiliency.

Having lost my co-driver and the "superbike", I turned to what was "close to me" (short circuit ;-): my son Léopold (21 years old) and my everyday bike.

We will be leaving next week, with a sum of compromises that gives, in the end, a rather cheerful cocktail.  My wife Corine will accompany us to provide us with the lodging in an RV, to make us meditate and maybe cure us the sores.  Bay2Bay becomes for the BtoB ("Baudouin to Boulder") cause in United states.

On the menu of the course, two mountain ranges that are a bit of a scarecrow: the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountain, days between 60km and 160km and 18 days to cover 2000 km.

Here is what it will look like, on a map.

And when we come back, Géry will just have left for a unique "Tour de France" powered by solar energy, and his legs :-).  In Europe, Bay2bay becomes  BtoB ("Belgium to Belgium" .. with a +4.000km loop across Lyon, Britany, Pyrénées and Alpes mountains, before moving back to Belgium).

The sun trip race is unique of a kind in the world long range Ebike amateur race. About 30 "suntrippers", together with their home made solar power generated machines (with 2 or up to 5 wheels), cycle throughout long days over a daily distance from 150 to 350 km. It's certainly a technological adventure, aimed to demonstrate that de-carbonized mobility is possible, even on long distances. But it's at first a human adventure, with people sharing same values such as willingness to discover, share, persevere, care for each other as the goal is to all arrives at the arrival line.

Here is the map of the race:

Several "first grade"  mountain passes will have to be overcome such as "le col du Tourmalet" in Pyrenées. After 19 km of continuous laces up to 2.114 m .. the view must be magic !

But Bay2bay is more than a single summer trip. It's from now on a life time commitment. Together we want to stay ambassadors of solutions to limit climate change. We'll share our experience throughout our journeys before we are able to reconvene physically at the end of this summer.

Enjoy your summer !

---------------------------------------------------

Alors c’était un peu « should I stay, or should I go now”?

Carbon Sources & Sinks

By not distinguishing between a fact and an opinion, by dint of confusing orders of magnitude and time scales, I wanted to find the large masses of carbon production and carbon sinks and share them here. We have included in the site under the "fact" tab the data we found in "the Project Drawdown - March 2020" and which states, by order of magnitude:   Carbon sources 1.       Electricity production                : 25% 2.       Cultivation & agriculture         : 24% 3.       Industry                                     : 21% 4.       Transportation                         : 14% 5.       Building                                    :    6% 6.       Rest                                           : 10%   Carbon sinks 1.       Land                                           : 24% 2.       The oceans                                : 17% 3.       The Atmosphere                        : 59%   What about taking another source: the book of Bill Gates, "How to avoid a

Hydrogen fuel cartridge .. let's power bikes ?

As "green" hydrogen production and storage has become an EU green deal central strategic axis, more and more innovative solutions emerge from academic and industrial players. Early this month, the Fraunhofer institute published an article presenting a prototype of what we can call "hydrogen power paste": hydrogen power paste (source : Fraunhofer institute) The principle behind is to create a magnesium hydride paste (whereas a high quantity of hydrogen is stored). When water is added to the mix, hydrogen gas is produced and can be used in a fuel cell to create electricity.  In the previously published article describing hydrogen fuel principles and applications, we mentioned that this H2 energy source was particularly suited for heavy transportation such as trains, trucks, or boats. This power paste concept is particularly interesting for light mobility or applications where there are no refill stations neither H2 storage tanks easily available. One can think of Hyd
3, 2, 1, ZERO Waste!!!   A company and a city in California, the perfect match to save the planet by making waste more valuable than ever.    Solena Group and Lancaster City are embarking on the production of greener-than-green hydrogen and will transform Lancaster City into the alternative energy capital of the world. The Lancaster plant will be ready to produce 11,000 kg per day. Working 24/7, 8,000 hours a year, the facility will be able to supply 3.8 million kg, the equivalent of 3,800 tons of green hydrogen per year.  This project will allow the Lancaster facility to become three times larger than any other green hydrogen supplier already in existence and with the advantage of using a method that will allow having clean hydrogen without going through methods that will increase the final price.   The primary material, which is waste, will be provided by the City of Lancaster. This project will allow the company to produce clean hydrogen from 40,000 tons of waste per year and will s
